We have FUNGI!

Yes, yes, I know I harvested this one early.  What can I say, I got excited.  This is the first shitake that has fruited on the logs I inoculated last December.  I’ve had plenty of fruitings on pre-inoculated logs, but not on logs I inoculated myself. First, that’s a really quick fruiting, so things seem to be going well.  I was a bit concerned, as there have been some false turkey tail ( or some kind of shelf mushroom anyway) growing on my new logs, and I was worried they would take over the whole logs before the shitake had established.  But it looks like I was worried for nothing, because the shitakes are kicking butt and taking names.  Excellent!

Today’s Harvest (God is Good)

Today was a good day.  The harvest is starting to come in.  We’ve been able to harvest a couple of cucumbers and peppers here and there, and some rhubarb throughout the Spring and Summer.  But the pace is picking up.  Tonight we harvested our white and yellow onions, and a good number of cucumbers and zucchini.  In the next few days we’ll have to harvest rhubarb, green beans, green peppers, cherry tomatoes, more cucumbers and zucchini, more blueberries, and some of our late-bearing blackberries.  Yesterday we harvested about 25 lbs of food in all, and we have probably another 35-40 lbs to bring in over the course of the next week.  So, we’ll need to get busy canning, blanching, freezing,

God Please Bless These Children

So I was working in my shop yesterday evening when the girls came and asked me if I had any “small bottles”.  My dad-senses immediately kicked in, and I asked them what they were up to.  Apparently they had harvested some blue bells and, soaking them in water, had concocted a perfume.  They now wanted to bottle the product to give to their mother (and to sell the rest).  While the whole project was wonderfully cute, what really got me was the name they came up with for the labels; “The Sisters Perfume”.  With me working from home, and their mother home schooling the girls, our family is incredibly close.  And these girls have a bond that will last for

October Update

Wow, it’s been awhile since I’ve posted.  No, we’re not closing up shop.  Just running into the same thing we run into every September/October.  This is our BUSY season.  This time of year we’re busy closing up the garden, hunting, finishing up year-end lawn work, etc.  And this year has been even more hectic than most due to the Mother Earth News Fair, some issues we had with some trees (more on that later), and the fact that we’re still trying to get our home ready for sale. Anyway, we do have some videos almost ready to post; our first experiment in making mead, one on the “tree challenge” I mentioned earlier, and a few others we have up our

Mrs SSP Facebook Post

Abby brought me her doll & a handkerchief asking me to “dress” her doll. As I was fumbling with it she said, “And this time can you make it not ” inaplopiate” Because last time you could see her bottom”. LOL I’m glad she knows what’s inappropriate …I know some adults that don’t know that.:))

Kids Love It Outside, If You Can Get Them Out the Door

So, we were visiting my father this weekend.  After church on Sunday, we drug the kids outside for a walk around part of the property. Abby wasn’t very enthusiastic, as she wanted to stay inside watching a movie.  I have nothing against movies, or tablets, or game consoles.  But kids playing and exploring on a farm is a different kind of fun.  You can see Miss Abby eventually got in the “swing” of things.  We searched for arrowheads in some recently-turned earth, checked out some deer tracks, swung on some wild grape vines, and generally had a great time.  You can see Amanda got a turn too, and even Mrs. SSP got in on the act. My point is this.

2014 Mother Earth News Fair

We just got back from the 2014 Mother Earth News Fair held at Seven Springs Mountain Resort, PA.  Had a fantastic time learning and sharing with a bunch of (mostly) like-minded people.  We got a lot of great content, but it will take us a few days to get it into a form we can share.  In the meantime, here are a couple of pictures of the girls learning how to milk a goat. #MotherEarthNewsFair Check back later this/next week for some of the things we saw / learned / experienced!

Where’s the Venison?

I pulled the card on my game cam last week.  I was very excited to see that I had almost 1,300 pictures on the card.  That is, I was very excited, until I looked at the pictures.  Oh I had a lot of game.  Does, does with fawns, turkeys, raccoons, opossums, skunks, squirrels, even a woodpecker.  But in all of those pictures there was nary an antler to be found.  Sure, I have my doe tag, and I actually prefer a doe for the freezer.  But I am concerned that I’m staring down the barrel of a one-deer season. This does not bode well.  So, I moved the camera to another area of the property, between a bedding area and
