Extracting honey, without an extractor

Today we’re checking the hives and pulling some frames for a light, mid-Summer honey harvest. We currently have three hives. But two of the were installed this year, so only one is ready for harvest.

Extracting honey without an extractor can be a challenge. It’s totally do-able. But it’s inefficient, time consuming, messy as all get out, and worst of all it destroys the drawn comb so the bees have to start from scratch on their comb production. This takes time, energy, and precious resources. So, it’s not ideal. I completely intend to have an extractor on-site for our Spring harvest.

After harvesting honey from only three frames we ended up with fifteen half-pint jars. Not too shabby. This was really just a short test run, as we’re going to harvesting several more frames in a few weeks when we have family in town to help us celebrate the harvest.
